Nippers at Toowoon Bay are an integral part of the Club.  Each Sunday from October to March our younger brigade gather to develop a life long appreciation of the surf under the watchful eye of our dedicated age managers, with the assistance of parents.

Children can join the ‘Nippers’ at Toowoon Bay from the age of five (5) and start learning about surf awareness and safety through the Surf Ed program.  As they get older they are able to participate in board paddling, surfing, swimming, sprinting, wading and fun activities and games, dependent on their ages and abilities.  At Toowoon Bay, the children can Join the Fun and develop their skills at the same time.

At Toowoon Bay, our focus is on educating and encouraging our nippers to gain confidence, respect and enjoyment for the beach environment. Skills are taught, practiced and assessed according to the age and ability of your child’s allocated group.  Club competition commences with the Under 8’s age group. This enables your child to participate in Central Coast Branch carnivals and events, and from Under 9’s for Surf Life Saving NSW Championships.

Most senior Nippers (u13’s) can undertake a Surf Rescue Certificate.  Probationary surf life savers can achieve this award from the age of 13yrs and this helps and prepares them for active patrolling duties with Toowoon Bay.  The award trains candidates in rescue skills, first aid and patient management, resuscitation and a theoretical component exploring safety knowledge and surf awareness.

All nippers must wear a Toowoon Bay club cap or age group colored cap and a pink vest, and most also choose to wear the TBSLSC club swimsuit/pants. These can be purchased at our uniform shop or online.  The Uniform Shop is open almost every Nipper Sunday morning.  Online purchases can be picked up during the week from the office or on Sunday mornings at Nippers.

Nippers and related training activities will generally still go ahead in wet and inclement weather as groups can work on the sand or indoors on activities such as lifesaving skills, first aid, signals and other patrol related activities.

Nippers will be cancelled in the event of thunder and lightning storms, or very heavy rain.
